Daringbadi: An accredited social health activist (ASHA) of Budrapanka village under this block in Kandhamal district reportedly died after giving birth to a baby boy Monday.
According to sources, Mini Pradhan went through labour pain Sunday night. Her family members requisitioned an ambulance but as the village lacked a proper road the ambulance failed to reach the village.
Left with no option, Mini’s family members admitted her to the primary health centre at Dasingbadi panchayat. However, the health centre lacked basic facilities for delivery. At midnight Mini delivered a baby boy. The baby’s condition was fine but the woman’s condition deteriorated.
Worse, even from the panchayat an ambulance could not be contacted due to lack of mobile network. Finally, family members hired an auto-rickshaw and rushed her to Daringbadi community health centre (CHC) where she died in the wee hours of Monday, doctors said.
The baby was treated in a special ward, said block program manager Santunu Kumar Sahu.
Daringbadi CHC in-charge Jaypal Senapati remained tight-lipped over the incident. Kandhamal chief district medical officer Sapneswar Gadnayak said Mini died due to loss of blood during delivery. A probe into the matter is on, he added.
“Due to lack of road connectivity in remote villages, pregnant women fail to reach hospitals in time, leading to their deaths,” social activist Kailash Chandra Dhandpat said. PNN
