Bhubaneswar, May 16: Health minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak paid a surprise visit to Capital Hospital Saturday for half an hour to inspect the functioning of the hospital.
The minister reached the hospital at around 10:30 am and visited the medicine, emergency, outpatient, casualty, and maternity wards besides visiting the X-Ray room and the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna (RSBY) and Biju Krushak Kalyan Yojna (BKKY) counters and the newly set-up drug distribution centre.
The minister observed that patients were not usually being referred to the X-ray facility available at the hospital. Around 60 X-rays are being done at Capital Hospital while the number of patients coming for X-ray is quite high at nearly 250.
“Some errant doctors are referring patients to labs outside the hospital to conduct X-rays due to their vested interests. The minister expressed his reservations over the practice and has asked authorities to put in place a strong mechanism to ensure transparency,” revealed a senior authority here wishing to remain unnamed.
Nayak meanwhile found out that the newly-introduced drug distribution centre has stocked only 161 types of generic medicines when it should have 272 types of medicines in the first phase.
“There are 161 varieties of drugs available at the DDCs. As per the minster’s order, we will request the medical corporation to avail the rest of the stock soon,” said BB Patnaik, Capital Hospital director.
Faults in BKKY are also came to light while Nayak was auditing the documents. “Due to a major fault in BKKY software, some patients are being deprived of taking benefits from the scheme while some insurance companies are taking huge benefits by doubling beneficiaries’ names,” said Patnaik.
Nayak asked hospital authorities to ensure all facilities for patients at emergency wing and the maternity ward that are the most visited places in the hospital.
