Mayurbhanj: In a case of alleged medical negligence, a health worker applied an acidic liquid on a woman instead of medicine after removing an intrauterine device ‘Copper T’ used as a contraceptive tool.
Writhing in pain, the woman is undergoing treatment at Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital in Baripada.
According to a source, Manas Kumar Nayak, a resident of Brundagadi Village under Udula police limits in Mayurbhanj district Sunday morning took his wife Shantilata to Gadigaon primary health centre under Khunta block for removal of Copper T, which was fitted eight months ago.
The female health worker at the PHC took the contraceptive tool out, but in a faulty way. It caused some injuries to Shantilata. In a manner of utter carelessness, the health worker applied some acid-type liquid instead of medicine.
Shantilata immediately complained of pain. It was when Manas contacted the health worker to know the reason of the pain; she said it was common after removal of Copper-T.
It was when Shantilata felt the pain unbearable; she cried seeking immediate medical attention. Then only it came to fore that the health worker had used an acid-type liquid while treating her.
Manas said the health worker had admitted to her mistake and she had promised to bear his wife’s treatment cost. She referred her to PRM Medical College and Hospital in Baripada.
As a result of the alleged faulty treatment, the woman’s whole body has turned black, it was learnt. Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Dr Rupabhanu Mishra, when contacted, said he was aware of the matter. An investigation will soon be initiated.
Baripada MLA Prakash Soren also visited the couple at PRMMCH and enquired about Shantilata’s health condition. Meanwhile, locals here alleged that medical negligence is quite common in primary health centres here and wanted exemplary action against the healthcare worker involved in this case.
