Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Saturday issued heavy rainfall warning for 11 districts of the state under the impact of a fresh cyclonic circulation area formed over Bay of Bengal.
Bhubaneswar Met centre director HR Biswas said a cyclonic circulation has been formed over northwest Bay of Bengal off West Bengal and Odisha coast, which will be converted into a low pressure in the next 24 hours.
Under its impact, heavy rainfall is likely to occur at one or two places over Malkangiri, Koraput, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Raygada, Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Khurda, Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur districts during the next 24 hours, he said.
Similarly, there will be heavy rain in some places of the districts–Balasore, Bhadrak, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Deogarh, Angul, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Kendrapara, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur and Cuttack, Monday (August 20).
The IMD advised fishermen not to venture into deep sea especially in the northwest bay and west central bay during next two days, Biswas stated.
The state has received an average rainfall of 4.6 mm during last 24 hours. While two districts have received average rainfall of above 10 mm (Deogarh- 29.9 mm and Malkanagiri- 19.7 mm), the average rainfall in 25 districts remained below 10 mm. Besides, three other districts — Bolangir, Gajapati and Khurda — have not received any rainfall during the past 24 hours.
Two blocks have recorded rainfall of more than 50 mm. The highest rainfall of 53 mm has been received in Kukudakhandi block of Ganjam district and 50.4 mm at Phiringia block of Kandhamal district.
The state has, so far, experienced 8 per cent excess rainfall in this monsoon season. While Bolangir is the only district with a deficit of 27 per cent rainfall, eight districts of Puri, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput, Kalahandi, Gajapati, Ganjam and Kendrapada have experienced more than normal amounts of rainfall, the Met said.
