Cuttack: With the arrest of Kartik Das alias ‘Ghunga’ and his subsequent interrogation, the underbelly of the thriving drug trade in this town has been exposed.

Police sources said the brown sugar business in the entire city was conducted by Ghunga and his younger brother Sanatan Das alias ‘Budu’. The latter would procure the contraband from Jaleswar in Balasore district and bring it to Cuttack. Then the two brothers would sell it to the customers.

Ghunga was selling brown sugar to a customer at a place close to Jagatpur market complex Wednesday when he was arrested by the police. A substantial quantity of heroin was found in his possession also. The same day he was produced in a court which sent him to police custody.

Sources said that from the confessions of Ghunga, the police have got a clear picture of how the drug mafia operated in this city.

Police have come to know Sanatan used to go Jaleswar frequently to bring heroin here. The two brothers had also earmarked areas where they would operate.

Sanatan controlled Madhupatna, Kalyaninagar, Nuapada, Badambadi and some other localities while Ghunga operated in Jagatpur, Mahanadi Vihar and some other places.

They would sell the brown sugar in sachets. One gram of the contraband would be divided into four sachets with each of them selling for Rs 600.

Giving this information Cuttack DCP Pratik Singh said Sanatan is absconding at present. He is an accused in a number of cases registered at the Chauliaganj and Tangi police stations. A special squad has been formed to hunt Sanatan down, Singh stated.
