Cuttack, Feb 18: A scintillating century by opener Akhil Herwadkar(161, 272 balls, 25×4, 3×6) and responsible knock from Shreyas Iyer (82, 124b, 8×4, 2×6) led the fight back for Mumbai at the end of day three of the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal at the DRIEMS Ground here Wednesday. Mumbai were in command with 376 runs on the board for the loss of seven wickets at stumps. Resuming from the overnight score of 87/1, Herwadkar and Iyer added 177 runs for the third wicket, before Iyer was caught by Mithun Manhas of Parvinder Awana’s delivery.
Hedwarkar was well supported by skipper Suryakumar Yadav (31, 73b, 3×4) before departing at 161 thanks to a superb catch taken by Delhi keeper Rahul Yadav. Delhi got some fresh air when left arm spinner Manan Sharma quickly removed two wickets including skipper Yadav. But young turk Siddhesh Lad (41 n o, 92 b, 7×4) hold Mumbai Innings and remained unbeaten at stumps
Delhi tried to put all sorts of pressure on Mumbai batsmen and Manan Sharma (4/89) took some quick wickets but Herwadkar and Siddhesh gave a tough fight back for the 40 time Ranji champions, who managed a poor 156 in the first innings. With two more days remaining in the match, Mumbai have already in a commanding position and making every possible way to book a semifinal berth.
Meanwhile in another match, Maharashtra overcame Karnataka by 75 runs following a superb spell by medium pacer Anupam Sanklecha (4/19) to enter the semifinals.
