Bhubaneswar: In what can be termed an achievement for the state government, Health Minister Pratap Jena Saturday said that his department will now initiate process to bring conjoined twin, now separated, Jaga-Balia back to the state.
“Condition of both Jaga and Balia is fine and we are preparing to get them back as they are now ready to get discharged from AIIMS New Delhi,” Jena told reporters during his visit to Cuttack Saturday.
The health minister further said twins will be kept under observation for few more days in New Delhi after their discharge, for which the state government has already appointed some of its officials and medical experts.
“For the first few days after discharge, we are planning to shift them to Orissa Niwas in the national capital to keep them under observation for some more days. We have appointed our officials and medical experts to keep a close watch on their health improvement,” the minister added.
Officials said that the twins’ discharge was delayed as the health condition of Balia, one of the separated conjoined twins, hadn’t shown desired improvement even though Jaga was doing well in December.
The twins are expected to remain under observation of AIIMS doctors for a few more days, sources said. The kids had undergone a two-stage separation surgery in AIIMS New Delhi, after being admitted to the premier Health Institute July 14 this year.
The conjoined twins were separated after a marathon surgery in the second phase at AIIMS October 25, by a team of 30 doctors from neurosurgery, neuro-anaesthesia and plastic surgery departments along with other paramedical staff.
The 28-month-old twins were born to a poor couple, Bhuan Kanhar and Puspanjali Kanhar of Malipada under Phiringia block in tribal-dominated Kandhamal district. They were joined at the cranium and were facing acute problems as they grew. The state government had sanctioned Rs 1crore from CMRF for their treatment.
