Bhubaneswar, Jan 15: Around 280 persons suffering from disability in the state can now hope to live a more meaningful life, with the Vocational Rehabilitation Centre for Handicapped (VRCH), in association with the directorate of welfare of persons with disability (PWDs), women & child development department, undertaking to impart skill development training to them.
The programme, which has been sponsored by the state government’s Employment Mission and targets both educated and less educated people, aims to enhance their employability through self-employment and wage employment.
VCRH authorities said that the participants enrolled for the programme will be provided computer training, training in tailoring, training in hardware repairing and other fields depending upon their qualification and ability.
Orissa Mining Cooperation (OMC) and NALCO have pledged to donate tool kits to help PWDs start earning as part of their corporate social responsibility activity. Among the equipment given for the training are 19 sewing machines and 14 domestic appliance repairing tool kits.
“One very important component in life that compels anybody to excel is self-confidence. Many common people lag behind because of the lack of self-confidence. However, I am surprised by the level of self confidence I see in you people (participants),” said A K Behera, deputy secretary, women & child development department.
Behera also said the government is committed to the welfare of differently abled people and urged them to be aware of the programmes and initiatives of the government to be able to utilise the assistance available to them.
“There are many noted personalities in the country who irrespective of disability have proved their worth in the society. Many differently abled persons have made their name in different professions. From photography to cinema, they have made their presence felt. Now there are enormous opportunities for all of you. You just need to go ahead and dare to dream,” said Ashok Kumar Sahu, director (H&A), NALCO.
Sahu assured the audience of his cooperation in this initiative.
Many differently abled persons who were felicitated during the event shared their success story. The members, all of whom had undergone training at the institute, expressed their gratitude towards the VCRH and encouraged the students to take advantage of the training.
