Cuttack, May 20: Orissa eves, who were out of the semifinal race salvaged some pride after thumping Chandigarh 8-0 in their third and last match of the quarterfinal group league of the National Sub-Junior Women’s Football Championship at the Barabati Stadium here Wednesday.
After two bizarre performances, Orissa eves finally returned to their billing as they outplayed their opponents completely with a clinical display. Top striker Bannya Kabiraj scored four goals including a hat-trick to lead the rout against the North Indians. She scored in the first, 28th, 31st and 73rd minutes respectively. Anjali Barua (17th, 42nd) and Bharati Das (38th, 58th) scored a brace each to finish the rout.
In another match, in-form Mizoram scraped past Bihar 3-1. Lalchhanhimi (first), B Vanlahriattiri( 45th) and Lalhmingchhuanpui (71st) were the scorers for Mizoram. Soni Kumari (63rd) got one back for Bihar.
The semifinal line-up below will show the apathy of the football administrators for the eves. Both the matches have been fixed during the day – the match Mizoram and Jharkhand to be played in the afternoon when the heat is at its highest. How long will the sportspersons suffer because of the callousness of the administrators who really do not know anything about the game. When they dread to step out of their air-conditioned rooms during the day, why ask these small under-15 kids play under the searing sun.
