Bhubaneswar: Sunil Meher, who was arrested Thursday for running high-profile sex rackets in the city, Friday told the police that his monthly income used to be around Rs 3 lakh.
The commissionerate police Friday urged a local court here to grant it seven-day remand of Meher. However, the court allowed the police to take him on four-day remand.
Nayapalli police inspector-in-charge Suryamani Pradhan told this newspaper that a case against Meher was registered in 2015 after a high-profile sex racket which was run by him was busted in IRC Village.
“We applied for a seven-day-remand of Meher. However, the court allowed us to take him on four-day remand. We will start interrogating him tomorrow,” he added.
Police said when Meher was nabbed he was wearing a gold bracelet which would be around Rs 2 lakh.
“On being asked about his monthly income, Meher told us that he earns Rs 2-3 lakh every month,” the police added.
Sources said Meher was also running a ‘paid friendship’ business in which he was providing women for friendship and dating.
“The cops will investigate about Meher’s links, both inside and outside the country. They will also investigate how Meher had contacted a Kyrgyz woman, who was rescued by police from Chandrasekharpur area last month,” they added.
Meher was arrested by the Quick Action Team (QAT) of the Commissionerate Police in Kolkata April 21. As soon as he arrived at the Kolkata airport on a flight from Ahmedabad, the QAT nabbed him.
Meher, who was wanted in nine cases, is notorious for running sex rackets both within and outside the state.
