Berhampur: Former legislator Bikram Panda, arrested in connection with the murder of Berhampur-based lawyer Pitabas Panda, Sunday claimed that he had been framed for political reasons and alleged that there was a conspiracy to defame the Biju Janata Dal (BJD).
Panda was taken out of Berhampur Circle Jail to MKCG Medical College and Hospital for a health check-up Sunday.
Panda was brought to the hospital under tight security and examined at the outpatient department, where doctors advised treatment for high blood pressure, piles and gall bladder-related ailments, sources said.
He was initially examined by physicians from the Medicine department, followed by consultations with surgery and dental specialists.
While being escorted back to the police van after the medical checkup, Panda told mediapersons that he is innocent and has been framed for political reasons.
He alleged a conspiracy to defame the BJD and claimed the case has political links. Expressing faith in the judicial system, he said, “I’m confident of getting justice.
Lord Jagannath is with me.”
When asked who had framed him, Panda said the people of Odisha know this well.
Panda’s remarks have triggered political discussions, as he had earlier refrained from making any statements during his previous court appearances.
Police have so far arrested 16 people in the case, including former Berhampur mayor Siva Shankar Das, alias Pintu, and sent them to judicial custody.
Bail pleas filed earlier by the accused have been rejected.
