Sundargarh: A conman defrauded a businessman of Rs 4.25lakh here after the latter issued a bank cheque of Rs 1,000 to a stranger, who had presented himself as an HDFC Bank staff canvassing people for opening new accounts with the bank. The victim was Rajesh Patel.
According to the businessman, a person identifying himself as a staff of Rourkela HDFC Bank main branch called him over the phone. He named himself as Amit and asked Patel whether he would like to open an account in the HDFC bank.
After Patel agreed to open the account, the impersonator said that a person from the bank would visit his house and talk about the details. As said by the conman, a person visited the house the next day and collected documents and a cheque of Rs 1,000.
Patel suspected foul play after the impersonator’s phone was switched off soon after. He visited the bank and came to know that a sum of Rs 4.25 lakh was transferred from his account to that of Manoj Kedia.
Patel lodged a complaint at the Town Police station following which police launched probe. Sundargarh SDPO Balabhadra Deepa stated that the accused might have tampered with the cheque and taken Rs 4.25lakh fraudulently from the businessman’s bank account. A case has been registered under Sections 420, 467 and 468 and an investigation was on, the SDPO added.
