Bhubaneswar: Around 635 labourers were killed and more than 200 labourers became permanently disabled while working in various industries of the state during the past 10 years.
According to information provided by Labour and Employees’ State Insurance (L&ESI) minister Sushant Singh in the Assembly, 441 accident cases at work places have been reported during the last 10 years, in which 635 persons were killed and 206 became permanently disabled.
However, the minister stated that in 54 such cases, where at least 32 labourers died, the government does not have any information about the compensation paid to the victims or their kin.
The process for paying compensation is still going on in 102 cases while four cases have been either dropped or dismissed, without mentioning any reason. In the remaining cases, `26.87 crore has been distributed as compensation to the victims or next of kin, Singh said.
Among the companies that reported maximum accident cases, Paradip Port Trust (PPT) recorded 17 accidents while 16 accidents happened in steel plants of Bhushan and 31 cases were reported at firms of Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL). Utkal Alumina International Ltd reported 14 such cases, eight in IFFCO plant and 10 such accidents also happened in Aarti Steel.
