Move over Dr and Prof, Karnataka government has just added another professional prefix to the list. On Teachers’ Day, the state government announced that its teachers can use ‘Tr’ before their names giving them a formal professional identity akin to ‘Dr’ for doctors and ‘Prof’ for professors.
Calling the two-letter prefix a symbol of a lifetime of service, CM Shivakumar said ‘Tr’ was more than a title — it represented society’s recognition of teachers who had dedicated their lives to shaping others.
In a country like India where professional prefixes like Prof for professors, Dr for doctors, Er for engineers have been attached with social identity and recognition of special knowledge, not to miss out the social prestige that it carries along with it, a distinct two-letter honorific for teachers seems like a long-overdue gesture of institutional respect as for decades educators have argued that teaching in India suffers from a crisis of status.
It would put schoolteachers, especially those teaching at primary and mid-level, who have been culturally undervalued compared to medicine, engineering, law, or civil services, on par with other specialised services.
Similarly, it will give a professional identity to the teachers, traditionally revered as gurus, by reinforcing the idea that teaching is not merely a vocation, but a profession built on professional knowledge, rigorous training, sound judgement and responsibility.
More importantly, with India maintaining a workforce of over one crore teachers guiding 24.72 crore students across 14.67 lakh schools, conferring symbolic prestige honours the significant role educators play in nation-building.
But then can a prefix fix the deep structural problems the profession has been facing for a long time? Here’s a reality check.
According to official data, despite a favourable overall Pupil-Teacher Ratio (PTR) of 24:1, secondary and senior secondary classrooms routinely face bloated PTRs ranging between 43:1 and 47:1.
The Ministry of Education has also flagged the persistence of single-teacher schools, meaning one teacher may be responsible for several grades and subjects while simultaneously handling administrative responsibilities. Similarly, premier government school networks like Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas face over 16,000 vacant posts due to recruitment bottlenecks.
Beyond headcount deficits, the teaching profession also suffers from job precarity. UNESCO findings reveal that 69% of private school teachers and 28% of government primary and secondary teachers work without formal employment contracts. Low pay, job insecurity and delayed salaries remain widespread, particularly in rural and non-aided private institutions.
Besides, teachers spend hours on non-teaching administrative duties ranging from election duty and census data collection to managing mid-day meal logistics, diluting their instructional time.
Moreover, shortages in specialised disciplines, including skill education, foreign languages, physical education, regional languages, among others, also pose a serious concern.
So, to a teacher handling a multigrade classroom of 60 students without basic amenities and learning materials, being addressed as ‘Tr’ before the name does little to ease the professional burnout behind it.
The real test, therefore, is to make ‘Tr’ more than a prefix by giving teachers the professional dignity, support and autonomy the title implies.
India needs to fill teacher vacancies, improve the deployment of teachers across schools and subjects, reduce excessive class sizes and invest in continuous, high-quality professional development.
Teachers need time to teach not paperwork to process. Cut the administrative load, give them professional autonomy, clear career paths and fair pay, and make the classroom their priority. Technology and AI must lighten the teacher’s load, not add another layer of work.
Make continuous professional development non-negotiable, using the National Professional Standards for Teachers (NPST) to strengthen teachers’ skills, career progression and professional autonomy.
If ‘Tr’ is to mean respect, it must be reflected not just before a teacher’s name, but in their pay, workload, working conditions and professional standing.
