London: Liverpool were stunned when they were crashed out of the FA Cup after suffering a 2-3 defeat in their fourth round match against West Bromwich Albion at home Saturday.
West Brom forward Jay Rodriguez’s brace and an own goal by defender Joel Matip handed Liverpool their first loss at Anfield since a 1-2 defeat to Crystal Palace last April, ending a 19-game unbeaten run at home.
Liverpool took the lead through forward Roberto Firmino’s early goal before Rodriguez responded with a double. Firmino then missed a penalty that was awarded after the referee’s use of VAR technology.
The hosts then went behind 1-3 after Matip’s own goal before forward Mohamed Salah pulled one back late in the game.
Earlier, Tottenham Hotspur fought hard for a 1-1 draw against Newport County. Harry Kane scored far better goals among the 30 he has netted this season but none of them had the critical feel of the tap-in that may yet transform Spurs’ season.
For not only did Kane’s 82nd-minute goal spare Spurs from potential FA Cup humiliation at the League Two club, the result also salvaged their best chance of winning silverware in a crucial campaign.
Kane converted Son Heung-min’s brilliant flick to level the scores after Patdraig Amond put the hosts ahead in the 38th minute.
