Bhubaneswar, Oct 19: Many people only fancy being part of a rock band in their youthful days, headbanging and singing loud on stage with band mates. But Dichi, Jason, Surya, Satyajeet and Zubin realised their dream and brought to life their very own band, Jewels Back. The band is based out of Cuttack, Orissa.
The group is among the few rock bands in the state and has been together for sometime now. It will be performing at this year’s Indian Surf Festival (ISF), which is set to get under way November 12.
Surya, who is the base guitarist of the group, says the band was invited to perform by Sanjaya Samanta, the founder of ISF, at a recently held get-together and upon liking their performance, he invited them to perform at the festival.
Lead guitarist and founder of Jewels Back Dichi talks about music that the band will be playing at the fest. “Our main thrust will be on creating instrumental music with less vocal presence. We will make sure that people like our performance,” he says.
Satyajeet is the lead vocalist of the band and Zubin is the drummer. The band at present is
simultaneously working on an English track and rock fusion with Kui language of Kandha tribe of Orissa.
Dichi says the prospects for a band such as theirs were not good in the state. “Whatever we do is out of love for music and our commitment to the band,” he says. The band recently started using the Samba, an instrument from the Northeast, as an experiment to give the band a unique identity.
According to the band members the forte of Jewels Back was ‘progressive metal’, which is a fusion of ‘heavy metal’ and ‘progressive rock’ and is loud. We chose this because there is a lot of guitar usage. Our favorite Indian artiste is A R Rahman,” Dichi says. The artiste has already performed for many Oriya movies and has worked with music directors such as Abhijeet Majumdar, Premanand, Guduli Rath and Bikash Bag. He says he has also performed for the Hindi film ‘Mary Kom’.
He adds that the band keeps ego out of the room when they make music. The band mates are of the opinion that people’s opinion about music is rapidly changing. “Our families used to opposeour idea earlier, but now they support us, ” Dichi says.
