Describing the Indian judiciary as “very re sponsible, responsive and re strained”, he said its primary responsibility was to uphold the rule of law and protect citizens’ constitutional and fundamental rights. He said India’s democratic strength rests on constitutional values, institutional checks and balances, respect for diversity and commitment to justice and liberty.

Justice Mishra stressed that an independent judiciary and socially responsible media are essential for a healthy democracy. While the judiciary safeguards the Constitution, the media promotes transparency and holds those in power account able.

Addressing students, he emphasised accuracy, objectivity and credibility in journalism. He urged them to read extensively, conduct thorough research and verify facts before publishing or broadcasting information.

He cautioned against sensationalism and mixing personal opinions with factual reporting, stressing the need to distinguish between news and views. During an interactive session, he answered questions on democracy, freedom of expression, judicial accountability and media ethics. IIMC Regional Director Dr Anand Pradhan welcomed the chief guest.

Dhenkanal District and Sessions Judge Pranab K Routray, judicial officers, faculty members and students attended the programme. Assistant Professor Dr BN Seth proposed the vote of thanks, while Assistant Professor Paras Yadav moderated the session.
