Bhubaneswar, August 16: In an attempt to arrest the rising incidents of road mishaps, commissionerate police officials have decided to put up banners along National Highway 16 here directing the heavy vehicle drivers to keep to the left as per traffic rules.
Police said drivers of heavy vehicles are not complying with the traffic rule of driving on the left side of the road for which several accidents are taking place on the highway crossing the city.
Twin city Police Commissioner Yogesh Bahadur Khurania told Orissa POST that the banners written in Oriya, Hindi, Bengali and Telugu will be put up along the highway directing the heavy vehicle drivers to keep to the left of the road.
“According to rules, heavy motor vehicles should commute on the left side of the road, but the drivers are not following the norm. We will put up the banners asking the drivers of heavy motor vehicles to commute on the left side of the highway or else they will be penalised. Banners will be written in Oriya, Hindi, Bengali and Telugu, as most of these drivers commuting on the NH belong to these regions,” Khurania said.
“We have convened a meeting of the members of the truck association and the bus association August 23 to inform them about the rule of keeping left on the road. Police will monitor the movement of the heavy vehicles near Khandagiri on the NH. The cops will instruct the drivers to drive on the left side of the highway for at least 15 days following which we will start penalising the violators,” he added.
Police sources said several accidents are taking place on the highway near Khandagiri for it being a residential area with several educational institutions.
