Khurda: The Khurda Excise team Wednesday seized 115 grams of brown sugar and 140 kg of ganja in separate raids at different locations, leading to the arrest of two smugglers.
In the first case, the District Mobile Unit of Khurda Excise conducted a raid between 7:00 am and 12:15 pm at Gurujanga Road, near the Nagamata Mansa Devi Temple.
During the operation, the team seized 115 grams of brown sugar along with a scooter.
The accused, identified as Trinath Behera (36), absconded from the spot, while Upendra Bhoi (56) was arrested by the team.
In another major seizure, the Khurda Excise Station, acting on a reliable tip-off, intercepted a vehicle near the roadside before the Malipada NH-16 flyover under Jankia police station limits.
During the search, the excise team recovered and seized 140 kg of ganja from the vehicle and arrested Susanta Kumar Sahoo (39) on smuggling charges.
The accused were booked under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
Further investigation is underway in both cases to ascertain the source and network involved in the contraband smuggling.
