Chitrada, Feb 7: Lakhs of rupees are being spent to eradicate tuberculosis and leprosy, but the diseases have not been
controlled in many parts of Mayurbhanj district, while those affected are living a miserable life in the absence of
healthcare facilities.
The killer diseases are playing havoc in Dehurisahi of Badajamabani village under Chitrada block.
In the past two years, three people have fallen victims to these diseases while life has become hell for seven afflicted
people who are struggling to meet ends amid grinding poverty. In the absence of healthcare facilities, they turn to traditional healers and quacks out of compulsion. Samil Dehuri, long afflicted with an unknown disease, has abandoned the hope of living any longer for lack of
medical care. He is not in a position to even visit a doctor, while his family reels in abject poverty. He is almost paralysed to do any work to earn for his family.
Tuberculosis has claimed three lives, two sons of Anand Dehuri and a son of Nalu Dehuri. Sarada Dehuri, another resident, died of leprosy, while her husband Anil Dehuri, also a leprosy patient, is living a life of Pariah in isolation, as locals frown upon him.
Several other people, including Sampu Dehuri and Yudhi Dehuri, are affected by tuberculosis. They have no option but to take herbal medicines.
Lili Dehuri, the daughter of Nitya Dehuri, is also affected by an unknown disease. Nanda Dehuri and Kalpana Dehuri, two other residents, are affected by leprosy. However, ironically, the health department has yet not taken any step to address the situation.
Contacted, chief district medical
officer Chandan Murmu said that steps would be taken in this regard.
