Bhubaneswar, Sept 16: KISS and Vikash Residential School won their respective quarterfinal matches in contrasting styles to enter the semifinals of the Inter-School MCL Cup football tournament at the Unit-VI Ground here Wednesday.
In the first quarterfinal, KISS thrashed DAV, Unit-VIII 5-0. KISS dominated the one-sided match from the start. Sunil Murmu (third minute) drew first blood while Dilip Murmu doubled the lead just a minute later. Laxman Soren then found the back of the net in the 13th minute.
After the change of ends, KISS maintained their aggressive momentum and added two more goals. Sana Marandi struck the fourth goal two minutes into the second half while Deepak Banda completed the rout a few minutes from the final whistle. Sunil was adjudged the man of the match.
The second match was a keenly-contested affair in which Vikash pipped Xavier’s, Kedar Gouri 1-0. Sampad Patra scored the all-important goal of the match.
GGPFC win
GGPFC beat Ekamra Sports Association (ESA) by a solitary goal in a closely fought Group D match of the 12th Gati Krushna Memorial football tournament at the Unit-I Boys’ HS Ground here Wednesday.
Both the teams played aggressive football throughout the tie. GGPFC were more opportunistic of the two sides with Santosh Amayant getting the winning goal in the 63rd minute of the match.
Utkal shares third spot
Utkal Ranjan Sahoo of KIIT is sharing the third spot along with five others on 6.5 points after the end of the ninth and the penultimate round of the IVth Keshabananda Das Memorial All India Fide Open Rating Chess Championship here Wednesday.
Utkal overcame higher-rated IM Anurag Mhamal of Goa. Soumyaranjan Mishra and Rakesh Kumar Nayak are sharing the joint fifth spot with 5.5 points each.
Rakesh lost to Himal Gosain of Chandigarh, while Rakesh forced Saptarshi Chouwdhury of Railways to share points with him.
