London, April 10: Leicester City won their fifth game on the trot defeating Sunderland 2-0 and took a step forward towards their first EPL title. The victory also ensured their maiden appearance in the Champions League next season.
After a barren first half, striker Jamie Vardy opened the scoring for Leicester in the 66th minute at the Stadium of Lights and followed it up with another in injury time. He thus became the first Leicester player to score 20 or more goals in a season.
Danny Drinkwater provided the perfect through ball as Vardy escaped the attention of Sunderland defender Younes Kaboul to slot the ball past an advancing Vito Mannone. The victory also confirmed Leicester City’s maiden appearance in the Champions League next season.
Meanwhile in matches played late Saturday evening, Manchester City recovered from going behind early on to beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1.
Stephane Sessegnon gave West Brom the lead in the sixth minute with a powerful near-post finish. In the 19th minute, however, Sessegnon turned to villain as he brought down Alexander Kolarov inside the penalty area, gifting Sergio Aguero a goal from a well-taken penalty kick. The winner came in the 66th, Samir Nasri poking in from close range after a scramble in the penalty area.
City’s slim title hopes remain alive for now. It remains in fourth place, provisionally four points clear of fifth-place Man United, which visits second-place Tottenham Hotspur, Sunday. West Bromwich are 13th.
Meanwhile Gylfi Sigurdsson’s 11th Premier League goal of the season led Swansea City to a 1-0 victory over champions Chelsea that effectively ended any lingering relegation fears for the Welsh club. The Iceland midfielder struck in the 25th minute when a cross from lively winger Jefferson Montero fell to him on the edge of the penalty box and Sigurdsson rifled a volley into the bottom corner of the net.
