Maggi, officials
Sir: The hue and cry over Maggi noodles is going on, and more states are taking the product out of shelves. There, as is rightly pointed out in the editorial, Maggi Moment (OP, June 9), however is no concern as regards the harmful substances in other products, like food packs, vegetables, fruits, milk and grains. The food safety regulators were not doing their job, and they were busy taking bribes. This shows how the established systems in this country are subverted by bureaucrats and petty officials. This does not limit itself to Maggi, or to food products, but every system in this country has been taken for a toss. It is time for a total overhaul of the bureaucracy, and limiting retirement age to 50, so that young, less corrupt and an energetic lot of young men and women can come in as replacement. Prime Minister Narendra Modi cannot move an inch with the present lot of bureaucrats if at all he wants to do something better, as he had promised during his election campaign in 2014. The rotten system must change, and corrupt and inefficient officials need be shown the door.

BJP, India
Sir: BJP says Indians are ashamed of India for 60 years and have become proud only a year ago. This is a crude and rude summing up of India and Indians. Fact is that Indians were proud of their country always. Even politically, they were proud of India after victory in the Bangladesh war that saw Pakistan losing its hold over its eastern province, and a new nation coming into force. They were proud too when they defeated the Emergency rule, and Indira Gandhi who foisted it on the nation. Those cannot be erased by mere oratory. Indians were terribly angry of the mega scams that destroyed the resources of the country during the Manmohan Singh-Sonia Gandhi years. It was this anger that turned into a votes against the Congress and votes for Narendra Modi and BJP. The moral is obvious. The people of India are fully aware of what is what, and who is who. If politicians use them as item to be toyed with their propaganda, the people will take it out on them some day.
Dr Ramnath Panigrahi, Teachers’ Colony, PIPILI
Cuttack, robbery
Sir: The gang involved in the Cuttack robbery has been busted within days of committing the crime. Clearly, police took the matter seriously especially after the high court took a serious note of the incident, and demanded that law order situation in the state should be reviewed. The seriousness on the part of the police and the court to catch the culprits was evident in this case mainly because the victim of the robbery happened to be a retired judge. Suggest that cops show the same seriousness in other cases as well.
