Listless Orissa lose to Mizoram

Cuttack, May 16: Title favourites Orissa failed to keep their purple patch going as they were blanked 0-3 by Mizoram in their first quarterfinal league match of Group-II of the National Sub-junior Womens’ Football Championship at the Barabati Stadium here Saturday.

Mizoram rode on Elizabet Vanlalmauii’s hat-trick by to put up a clinical display against the hosts. The visitors dominated the game right from the word go as Elizabet broke the deadlock in the 29th minute. The scoreline remained unchanged till the lemon break.

After the change of ends, Mizoram were more aggressive and in the process scored twice. Elizabet struck in the 56th and 83rd minutes to complete her treble.

However, Orissa have only themselves to blame for their defeat as they missed a flurry of scoring opportunities. They will play their next match against Bihar May 18.

In the second quarterfinal of the same group, Bihar pummeled Chandigarh 6-0. Jyoti Kumari drew first blood as early as the fourth minute. But after that Chandigarh eves upped their ante and had 60 percent possession of the ball. Though they got couple of opportunities, they were unfortunate not to score as both the teams went into the break with the scoreline reading 1-0 in favour of Bihar.The second half was all about Bihar’s show. They scored five more goals reducing the opposition players to mere spectators. Priyanka Kumari (59th and 69th) struck a brace, while the remaining goals were scored by Soni Kumari (60th), Nisha Kumari (81st) and Sarjana Kumari (83rd).
