Malkangiri, Sept 4: Hundreds of people of Mundaguda village under ward-1 of Malkangiri municipality Tuesday staged a demonstration over dumping of garbage near the village by the civic body authorities.
More than 300 men and women of the village warned of agitation if the administration continues to dump waste near the village from Wednesday.
According to reports, the civic body authorities had been dumping garbage near the village for the last one-and-a-half-year. Opposing the move, the villagers had also lodged complaints with the administration on several occasions. A few months back, the sub-collector and the executive officer of the municipality visited the site and assured the people of looking into the matter, but in vain.
The villagers said the municipality has been dumping decomposed carcasses of dogs and farm animals in addition to the garbage. The stink generated by the rotten trash makes their life miserable. Besides, rags washed away in rain water enter farmland damaging crops. School students find it difficult to pass through the stretch due to the foul smell.
On the other hand, farm animals also suffer from various diseases after consuming the polythene carry bags and other toxic material dumped there.
As their repeated requests to the administration didn’t yield any result, the villagers Tuesday didn’t let the garbage-laden vehicle of the municipality to unload the trash, it was learnt.
“We would block the main road of the town if the administration continues to dump garbage from tomorrow,” warned Prakash Panigrahi, Jasingh Gouda, Bhudhar Nayak, Balaram Pujari and Kishore Halba of the village.
