Bhubaneswar: A low-pressure area over the South Andaman Sea is likely to intensify into a depression around October 31 and move towards the Andhra Pradesh coast over the subsequent two days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Friday.

IMD also predicted that several parts of Odisha are likely to experience rainfall and thunderstorms over the next five days.

The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers at many places across the state on October 30-31 and at a few places over the subsequent four days.

The weather office has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds of 30-40 kmph, gusting to 50 kmph, at one or two places in several districts. Till 8.30 am of October 31, the warning covers Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Kataka, Sundaragada, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagada.

Between 8.30 am of October 31 to 8.30 am of November 1, the warning is limited to Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati and Ganjam.

On 8.30 am of November 1 and 8.30 am of November 2, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are likely in Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Kataka, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagada.

The warning for November 2-3 and November 3-4 covers Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagada.

Meanwhile, the well-marked low-pressure area, a remnant of Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Arnab, over north Chhattisgarh and adjoining East Madhya Pradesh weakened into a low-pressure area by 8:30 am Friday. Its associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 4.5 km above mean sea level.

The IMD has advised people to remain alert for changing weather conditions, stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under trees and unplug electrical and electronic appliances. People have also been advised to move away from water bodies during lightning and keep away from objects that conduct electricity.

Strong winds may damage plantations, horticulture and standing crops, besides causing damage to banana trees, power and communication lines, kutcha houses, huts and other vulnerable structures.
