Bhubaneswar: A man was arrested Monday from his residence at Chaudwar in Cuttack district on charges of raping more than 10 girls on the pretext of marriage.
The accused has been identified as Gaurav Kumar Dash (28).
According to reports, Gaurav, who was working in Kuwait, used to befriend girls through social media platforms including Facebook and WhatsApp.
Posing himself as an Army officer and promising to marry them, he maintained physical relationship with the girls during his visit to Bhubaneswar.
A girl working at a private bank in Bhubaneswar also had fallen in his trap. Gaurav kept her at different hotels and lodges and maintained physical relationship with her.
However, the girl realised that Gaurav was cheating on her after she came in contact with another girl, who also was used by Gaurav earlier.
After learning the truth, she began to distance herself from him. This infuriated Gaurav as he threatened to upload videos of their intimate moments on social media platforms.
When the girl was returning from her office Friday, Gaurav abducted her in a car from JaydevVihar square and took her to his house where he inflicted mental and physical torture on her for days.
However, the girl managed to escape and lodged a written complaint with Nayapalli police following which the arrest was made.
“More girls have fallen victim to the accused. However, we are waiting for the victims to come forward and lodge their complaints,” said a senior police officer.
