Angul: In a shocking incident, a man allegedly killed his daughter and subsequently buried the body in a jungle about one-km away from his house at Bahalsahi under Chhendipada police limits in this district late Saturday night.
The matter came to the fore Monday when some villagers noticed a large pit dug out in the jungle with a liquor bottle lying nearby. They smelled something fishy and informed the police. The police with the help of a forensic team exhumed the body and found several injury marks on it.
The villagers identified the body as that of Mini Bhutia (23), daughter of Rupa Bhutia. The incident has spread shockwaves in the area with hundreds of villagers thronging the site.
Sources said Bhutia after killing his daughter carried the body to the jungle where he consumed liquor and dug out a pit to bury the body.
Police registered a case and picked up Bhutia from his house for questioning, ASI Ranjan Majhi said. Later, he was released from detention. The body has been sent for post-mortem and action will be taken against the guilty after receiving the report, the ASI said.
Bhutia tried to defend himself claiming his daughter, who was mentally ill, committed suicide. He came to know about his daughter’s death after he returned from his elder daughter’s home in Angul Saturday night, Bhutia claimed. He buried the body in the jungle due to lack of wood for cremation, Bhutia said.
The villagers, however, refused to buy his claims. They questioned as to why Bhutia did not inform the police about his daughter’s suicide and hurriedly buried the body in the jungle in the middle of night.
