Maneswar farmers threaten stir over insurance issues

Sambalpur: Upset over non-clearance of insurance claims, farmers of Maneswar block in the district said the tehsil administration has been ignoring their complaints. They warned of a stir if their grievances are not addressed.

The farmers said their Kharif crop was completely destroyed due to poor rain in 2018. As per the insurance policy, the administration had conducted a survey of the loss on the basis of crop cutting in Badmal, Subanapur, Jaduluising and Bolabangar villages of Dakara pancahyat in the presence of the farmers.

But after some days, the farmers were informed that the panchayat was rejected insurance money. The farmers had complained against this to the Statistics, Agriculture and Revenue Departments. But the officials told the farmers that there were no records about the Kharif crop loss.

Suspecting irregularities in the survey report, the farmers filed a RTI request for the survey report with the Collector. But they got no answer.

The farmers took up the matter with the Collector during his public hearing in Jujumara block August 26. The farmers said that no officers have contacted them till now.

Expressing their resentment, the farmers said they had been complaining at the Collector’s office from 2018. “There is no one to hear our problem. They have been giving only assurances. But no action has been taken,” the farmers said.
