Bhubaneswar, Oct 31: Mantu Das (3/34) and Suhel Rahman (3/22) of Assam bowled fiery spells to trigger a batting collapse of Orissa on the first day of their four-day CK Nayudu Trophy match at Bolangir, Saturday.
Orissa were skittled out for a paltry 112 runs in their first innings thanks to the brilliant bowling efforts by Mantu and Rahman. Jogeswar Bhumiz (2/16) and Avoy Kumar Yadav also exploited the overcast condition to the hilt and chipped in with two wickets each. Ranjit Singh (37, 115b, 6×4) was the only batsman to put up some resistance with the bat.

In reply, Assam were 71 for three at stumps of day one with opener Rahul Hazarika (47 batting, 77b, 9×4, 1×6) playing fluently.

Semifinalists spotted
Bikash Singh, Tousif Haque, Asif Haque and Sagar Ghatge won their respective quarterfinal matches to enter the semifinals in the men’s singles event of the KDTTA All Orissa State Ranking Table Tennis Championships here Saturday. Bikash will meet Tousif in the first semifinal, while Asif will face Sagar in the second semifinal.
In the quarterfinals, Bikash thrashed Kallol Ganguly 4-0, while Tousif triumphed over DD Mohanty 4-1. Asif beat MD Azhar 4-2 and Sagar defeated Saswat Samal by an identical margin.
In the women’s singles, Ananya Basak, Ankita Senapati, Samartha Prusty and Poushali Ghatak made it to the semifinals after winning their respective quarterfinal matches. Ananya will meet Ankita in the first semifinal, while Samartha will face Poushali in the second semifinal.
Eves enter semis
Orissa eves beat Madhya Pradesh 4-2 in the quarters to enter the semifinals of the National Senior Softball Championship at Chandigarh, Saturday. The visiting team will meet hosts Chandigarh in the semifinals Sunday.
Rowers bag five medals
Orissa rowers bagged five medals Saturday including three silver and two bronze medals in the National Open Rowing Championship at Rameswaram. Narayan Munda secured two silver medals in the kayaking and paddle categories. Manaswini Moharana secured a silver medal in the girls’ kayaking segment. D Sekhar Rao won two silver medals in the boys’ paddle and kayaking categories.
