Malkangiri: A woman in Jantri village from the cut-off region of Malkangiri district fled her home and came to stay in Chitrakonda after being threatened by Maoists on suspicion of her being a police informer, a report said Saturday.
The woman, Sina Pangi is the first wife of a tribal Sama Pangi in the village. She joined her husband and co-wife Sundari Pangi in Chitrakonda after being banished from her village. The village is cut off from the rest of the district by the Balimela reservoir and lacks development on all fronts.
Reports about people in the cut-off villages living a life of refugee in the district are nothing new as Maoists who hold sway in the region drive people out of their homes at the slightest pretext by dubbing them as police informers.
Earlier, her husband Sama and co-wife Sundari had similarly left their village in 2015 after being indicted as police informers by the ultras. However, Sina had stayed back and was looking after their agriculture land and livestock. Now, she had to flee after being threatened by the ultras.
Recently, the Maoists had called her to a Praja court and dubbed her a police informer, asking her to leave the village as her son Bhimasen Pangi was working outside in Andhra Pradesh. Fearing for her life, she fled from her village and joined her husband and co-wife in Chitrakonda. After having come to know about their ordeal, the Chitrakonda police asked them to meet the superintendent of police in his office.
Later, Sina, accompanied by her husband, met SP Jagmohan Meena at his office and sought help. Meena asked them to provide their details assuring to recommend their names to the collector for inclusion in ration cards, Aadhar cards and all other social benefits provided by the Centre and state government. Meena also assured them that they would be rehabilitated for the time being in Chitrakonda.
Sama, while living in Chitrakonda, earned his livelihood by rowing a boat in the Balimela reservoir. While he has four sons and two daughters from his first wife, he has three daughters from his second wife. PNN
