Belpada, Nov 24: Maoists gunned down Alekh Majhi, a naib sarpanch of Bagdor panchayat after trying him in a ‘Praja court’ under this block in Bolangir district on the suspicion of him being a police informer Monday night.
The matter came to fore after some residents of Uunrakhaman village found his bullet-riddled body lying on the village outskirts and lodged a complaint with Belpada police Tuesday.
Sub-divisional police officer Pradipta Mohapatra, IIC Ramakanta Jena and SOG jawans rushed to the spot and started an investigation. Police handed over the body to his family members after post-mortem.
The incident, a first of its kind in the area, has spread shockwaves among residents. Roads in the village remained deserted with villagers remaining tight-lipped about the incident.
According to sources, six Maoists including two female cadres raided the village Monday night and enquired about the whereabouts of Majhi, who had been to his brick kiln. The ultras, who were waiting on the outskirts of the village, waylaid Majhi and his brother-in-law about 9 pm. They tied his hands with a rope and dragged him to a Mandap in the heart of village. The ultras then ordered all Gountia landlords and villagers to assemble at the place.
There they tried him for working against Maoists as a police informer and pronounced death sentence in the presence of over 150 villagers. The villagers sought an apology on behalf of Majhi and appealed to the rebels to spare him. Unmoved by the pleas, the ultras dragged him again to the village outskirts and shot him dead.
The rebels left behind some posters in the name of Communist Party of India (Bolangir Area Committee) where they alleged Majhi was working as a police informer over two years. PNN
