Men who matter

In any format of cricket, all-rounders are always a special category. They are assets to the side as was proved during the recently-concluded World T20. The upcoming ninth edition of the IPL will also not be an exception and all-rounders will be expected to play a key role for their respected sides. Don’t be fooled by the stats on offer. All these players have the ability to win games on their own for their sides. And if they can do that even twice, it will be a huge benefit for the team. Here are some of the all-rounders you have to watch out for.

Dwayne Bravo (Gujarat Lions): During his stint with the now defunct Chennai Super Kings, the West Indian batted at No. 5-6 and mostly bowled at the death. His role will more or less remain the same as his skipper Suresh Raina (a former CSK player himself) will definitely use Bravo the same way as MS Dhoni did in CSK.

Shane Watson (RCB): The Aussie all-rounder showed his prowess in the game against India in the World T20 when he got a quickfire 30-odd runs and also picked up two vital wickets. This year he emerged the costliest player in the auctions, but then he has the ability to deliver. Simply a player to be wary off for the opposition.

Andre Russell (KKR): Very rarely do you come across players who bowl at 140-plus and then hit the ball out of the park. Russell has been a revelation for KKR in the last two years with his bowling, batting and extra-ordinary fielding. This year also he is expected to don the same role.

M-22         R-390        SR-179.72         W-16         Ecn-8.78

Pawan Negi (DD): The pint-sized left-arm spinner and batsman, according to many has the potential to be tremendous match-winner in the shortest format of the game. Negi burst into limelight last season with some fearful death overs hitting and also picking up wickets at crucial junctures. There has to be talent otherwise, he wouldn’t have emerged as the second costliest player.

M-21         R-152        SR-149.02         W-13         Ecn-8.05

Hardik Pandya (MI): Again another all-rounder of the Andre Russell category. His bowling, fearless hitting and brilliant out-fielding have made him an integral part of the Indian team. Pandya this time will be more influential as his international experience will stand him in good stead.
