Bolangir, May 6: In the wake of the reported death of a patient of the town due to jaundice, the state health minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak Wednesday sought to quell the report saying the patient died due to a kidney ailment.
District collector M MuthuKumar had also told Orissa Post Tuesday that the patient had died due to kidney ailment.
Meanwhile, a jaundice patient, Rajiv Sahu of Chimnibhati Pada, was referred to VSS Medical College and Hospital, Burla from a private nursing home here as his conditioned worsened, the collector had said Tuesday. When asked about the condition of Raju by the reporters, the minister said, “The patient who has been referred to VSS Medical College and Hospital, Burla for treatment is also in a stable condition and the cost of his treatment will be borne by the government.”
Days after the outbreak of jaundice in several parts of this town, the minister visited some affected areas and took stock of the situation in consultation with health and administrative officials of the district Wednesday. The minister also met some jaundice patients and visited the house of an affected family in Sudapada in the morning.
He later enquired about the condition of jaundice patients undergoing treatment at the district headquarters hospital and distributed glucose among them. The minister directed the chief district medical officer (CDMO) to improve the functioning of ICU and ordered the ADMO (family welfare) to clean up the gynaecology ward within 16 days.
“So far 3,060 persons have been screened and 39 Jaundice cases have been detected in Bolangir Town,” the minister told reporters after a review meeting with officials Nayak directed the officials to fix all cracks in the water pipeline of the town immediately. The urban development minister is likely to visit the town soon, he said.
“I had earlier lodged a complaint with PHD about the cracks in water pipeline but nobody paid any heed to my complaint and no action was taken by the PHD,” said a councillor who was present in the review meeting. “The meeting of Rogi Kalyan Samiti here is not held regularly. It should be convened regularly,” another councillor said.
When asked about the status of a proposed medical college in the district by the reporters, the minister said the construction of the college would start soon. “The tender process of medical college here is already over and the construction work would start soon,” Nayak said.
Meanwhile the district administration has formed a task force to contain the spread of the disease in the town. Headed by district collector M Muthukumar, additional district medical officer, public works department assistant engineer, a junior engineer from WESCO and a police sub-inspector are other members of task force.
