Baripada, March 27: Tensions flared up at the district headquarters hospital here when a minor girl died in the hospital after allegedly receiving wrong injection late Thursday night.
Relatives of the deceased child and locals raised ruckus before going on a ransacking spree on the hospital premises.
According to reports, 10-year-old Isha Behera, daughter of Dinabandhu Behera, was affected with measles and admitted to the hospital Thursday morning. She was initially kept in paediatrics ward and later shifted to infection ward. But her condition
became critical at about 9 pm, following which a doctor administered an injection to her.
The relatives said the child succumbed and her body turned unusually black minutes after the injection. When they desperately tried to know the reason of her death and ascertain whether the injection had expired, or if it was a wrong match for the ailment of the child, the injection could not be found.
The relatives demanded an explanation from the doctors about the body of the child turning black
immediately after the injection.
A complaint has been filed against the doctor responsible for the incident with local police station.
As tempers continued to run high till late night, police were deployed. Additional district medical officer Shibananda Mohanty reached the spot and assured the angry people of a probe. They later relented.
It has been learnt that neither the chief district medical officer Dr Chandan Murmu nor the ADMO Dr NC De were present in the hospital at the time of the incident. While the CDMO was in Madhya Pradesh on an exposure tour, De had gone to Balasore, without entrusting charge to any other doctor.
Death of patients due to medical negligence has also been reported in Oriya daily ‘Dharitri’ several times in past.
