Bhubaneswar, March 9: A day after a minor boy lost his palm while working in a
sugarcane mill at Borigumma in Koraput district, the state government Monday ordered an administrative probe into the incident and asked the district collector to submit the report immediately.
“We have asked the collector to
investigate the matter. Prima facie, he found that there were no irregularities in the case. The boy was working in the mill which
belongs to his family,” labour minister Prafulla Mallik told Orissa POST.
Earlier in the day, transport and commerce minister Ramesh Chandra Majhi stated that the government would bear the treatment expenses of the victim. Necessary arrangements would be made by the district administration for proper treatment of the boy, he added.
Meanwhile, Congress chief whip Taraprasad Bahinipati said neither the
district labour officials (DLOs) nor
government officials concerned have taken steps to prevent such unfortunate incidents.
The state government had not given any specific instructions to the district collectors in this regard, he alleged. “We will raise the demand for drastic action against the erring officials in the next Assembly session,” he said.
Notably, Damu Jani, a Class V student, was crushing sugarcane when his left palm came under the crusher. The minor boy, along with his mother, had gone to the mill Saturday. He was rushed to Borigumma Hospital and later shifted to Nabarangpur
district headquarters hospital.
