Bhubaneswar, June 12: The stage is set for the onset of southwest monsoon which is to hit the state in the next 24 hours, predicts Meteorological Centre here Friday.
The Met Centre here detected a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal which could trigger heavy rainfall in the state’s interior pockets. The state may experience heavy or torrential rainfall till June 19 at a few places and spread simultaneously, said the sources.
“The present conditions are most favourable for the onset of southwest monsoon. The system lurking over the Bay may add congenial condition for monsoon to spread all over,” said Met director Sarat Chandra Sahu.
India Meteorological Department, New Delhi, meanwhile has indicated the southwest monsoon would spread to Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra in the next four days.
Met centre has recorded heavy rainfall in parts of state in the past 24 hours with the highest rainfall being 132mm mapped at Kantapada in Cuttack followed by 125mm at Jharigaon in Nabarangpur district.
Titilagarh received 49.1mm rain, 33mm in Puri and 33.2mm in Keonjhar in the last 24 hours. “Moderate to heavy rain or thundershowers would occur at many places over interior Orissa while coastal pockets would experience light to moderate rain in the next 24 hours,” sated a Met bulletin in the day.
The heavy rains have reduced the maximum temperature at many places with Bhawanipatna recording 38.2° Celsius.
Bhubaneswar which was extremely hot recently breathe a sigh of relief with a spell of rain that brought down temperature to 30.2°Celsius. Cloudy conditions will prevail over the city and its neighbourhood Saturday while light rain or thundershowers may lash parts of the city in the next 24 hours.
The maximum temperature in the city may remain around 36°Celsius Saturday.
