Bhubaneswar, April 4: Safety of women has always been a major issue not only for the members of their families, but also for the local administration and the mobile companies who have come up with the unique idea of keeping provisions for downloadable apps, which could help women if they find themselves in any kind of trouble.
There are more than 25 types of applications available for the safety of women and those could be downloaded from the site of the service providers such as Google App, Play Store etc. Bsafe, Circle of 6, Being Safe, Nirbhaya: Be fearless, scream alarm, IGo safety- personal safety app, Suspects Registry, Vith U, Smart 27×7, Guardly, Hollaback, Life 360 family location, Street Safe etc. are some of the prominent mobile apps available both for iPhones and Android phones and are very popular among women.
Nisruta Bohidar, a 2nd year law student of KIIT said, “Though there are many apps available, I use Vith U, an app which is an initiative of Gumrah of Channel V. I often watch Gumrah in Channel V, so from that I came to know about the app.” She has been using the app for almost one year now. However, till date, much to her relief, she has not got the opportunity to use it, but ‘feels safe’ that her mobile has an app that will help her in need. “It is really necessary for all of us, especially for working ladies and students, to install safety apps as they are really helpful. Being a law student, I am often sent for internship in different places and sometimes it so happens that I have to work late hours. Apps become a necessity then,” she said.
The app Nisruta uses, at two consecutive clicks on the power button, starts sending alerts, every two minutes, to the contact number that has been fed into the app as that belonging to the designated receiver or guardian. “Earlier there used to be problem of space on mobiles. Now there are lots of space for storing different types of apps in our Smart or Android phones; therefore one should install such apps for safety,” she said.
Though there are many young girls, who are aware of such apps, but there are many who are still ignorant about those. Binni Panda, a housewife, probably in her early 50s, was shopping in a mall with two other ladies from her family and none of them have ever heard about mobile apps meant for the safety of women. “I have never heard about such mobiles apps available for women’s safety. I don’t know much about this, but if such apps are available, then working ladies and students, who often stay outdoors should have them in their mobiles”, said Binni.
Ankita Mishra, who works in a management company in Bangalore said, “Being in management field, I often have to work till late night. I travel alone at night after work, but travelling alone, never makes me feel safe. I use some of the mobile apps meant for the security of women. I have installed Bsafe and Circle of Six in my mobile. It’s been more than one year now, that I have these apps and I believe that these will help me.”
