Mortar-like bomb found

Keonjhar/Raisuan: A bomb resembling a mortar was found at a desolate place, 500 metre from Suakati police outpost in Keonjhar Saturday. The object, packed in a wooden box, triggered panic among locals amid speculation that it could be a fake one.

Locals suspected that some people must have dumped it there. They informed police who kept a watch on the item. A scientific team from Bhubaneswar was called in. The bomb may weigh around 10 kg and is one-and-a-half ft long.

Police said, if it is a bomb it will be defused. The area where it was found was once hit by Maoists. Locals suspected that ultras might have planted it there.

They said a group of unknown people had come to the area in a four-wheeler Friday night. Besides, a team of officials was also in the area to survey a dam.

Police said, a scientific team from Bhubaneswar can only confirm what the object is. Keonjhar SP Jaynaryan Pankaj said he has visited the spot.
