Khurda: The newly enforced Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 seems to have no impact in this small town as motorists were seen blatantly violating the provisions of the act Monday, a day after the execution of the rules.
According to sources, tripling and helmetless bikers were largely seen on Khurda-Bolangir and Kolkata-Chennai national highways crossing the police district of Khurda, Monday. Similarly, traffic police were ostensibly oblivious to small goods carrier vehicle carrying some children, all aged around five years, through New Bus stand.
Locals alleged that the implementation of the new rules has entered rough weather as adequate attention was not paid to infrastructure upgradation and practicality of the same.
“There was no crackdown whatsoever on traffic violators by Khurda police Monday. As a result, the new rules have remained confined to billboards only,” said a local.
Even though the newly enforced traffic norms envisage steep penalties on traffic violators, the residents, vehicle owners, police and Transport department officials of Khurda are quite indifferent to its execution.
On Monday, bikers and bus drivers were seen using cell phones while driving.
Some minor girls were also seen having joyride on scooters on the occasion of Ganesh puja. Moreover, overloaded vehicles were plying menacingly on the highways here.
There was no let-up in overtaking even though hefty penalty provision is there in the amended law, said the sources.
