Padmpur, June 12: The police Friday cracked a murder case that took place three years ago arresting 15 persons.
A cattle trader Kabilal Suna was killed in Ganjadabar village under Paikamal police limits in Bargarh district May 4, 2012.
The accused had abandoned the body on Lakhana-Harishankar Road rail track to destroy evidence while the government railway police had also registered a case of unnatural death in the incident, Bargarh superintendent of police (SP) Ashis Singh said here at a press conference.
Deceased’s elder brother had lodged a complaint with police alleging his father was murdered, following which the then inspector in-charge Yashobant Pradhani started investigations. But the police couldn’t make much headway.
The case was reopened after Ashis Singh took over as the SP and tried to solve the old cases.
According to police, Kabilal used to buy farm animals from the villagers and sell them at Dharmagarh market in Kalahandi district. Meanwhile, Butia Majhi, Abhilash Majhi and Brushav Majhi of the village found their bullocks missing May 1, 2012. The three had asked the people of nearby villages about the missing bullocks. Some of the people told Abhilash that cattle trader Kabilal had stolen their bullocks. People started searching for Kabilal and manage to catch him in Jharbandh village under Paikamal police limits. They took him to Ganjadabar village. Some of the villagers assaulted him so mercilessly that Kabilal died on the spot. Later, the villagers, in a bid to destroy the evidence, had thrown the body on the rail track.
Police couldn’t crack the case due to unanimity among the villagers and the area being a Maoist-inflicted region. However, SP Singh asked a team of officials to start the probe again. Acting on the order, sub-divisional police officer Prakash Patra, Paikamal IIC Satyananda Patra and others managed to arrest 15 villagers in the case.
The names of the arrested persons were given as Paduram Netam, Narwey Majhi, Tikchand Majhi, Abhilal Majhi, Raimal Majhi, Deb Majhi, Kantilal Majhi, Dharam Singh Majhi, Dhanu Majhi, Rikhiram Dharua, Sabachinna Majhi, Madan Majhi, Tikchan Majhi, Basulal Netam and Prahlad Netam. Another accused Pabitra Majhi would be arrested soon, Singh said.
