Bhubaneswar, Oct 13: Oriya music director Satyabrata Sahu was arrested Monday by Mahila police for allegedly torturing his wife and cheating her of Rs 3.70 lakh.
Sahu (27) is facing charges under Section 498 (cruelty by husband), 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (causing hurt) and 417 (cheating) of IPC. His wife, Tapaswini Sahu (23) who is the complainant in the case, alleged that her husband ran a sex racket and pimped women to Oriya music producers, contractors, real estate owners and many other rich people.
Tapaswini said she had objected to Satyabrata’s illegal activities ever since she came to know of them and had asked him to stop such activities immediately. “But he beat me up mercilessly and broke my limbs. He also threatened that he would kill me if I revealed his secret, illegal activities to anyone else,” Tapaswini told Orissa Post.
Tapaswini, an aspiring actress then, had met Satyabrata in 2011 on the sets of a music album. In a few months, they had got closer and decided to marry, she said. After marriage, she set up a joint venture with her husband and set up an NGO to promote aspiring artists.
Tapaswini also alleged that Satyabrata started living with another actress in 2012 after she had objected to his alleged illicit business. “Between 2012 to 2014, he ran a sex racket with this actress and they pimped women to high-profile customers,” Tapaswini said. She alleged that Satyabrata procured girls from Kolkata, rural parts of Orissa and other places for the racket. “These girls were mostly aspiring actresses,” she said.
“I’ve invested Rs 3.70 lakh in the NGO and I continue putting whatever I earn through my acting career. On the contrary, he (Satyabrata) pillaged my money and ran a sex racket in the disguise of promoting actors,” Tapaswini told the newspaper. The couple had also started together another NGO called Watershed Management Programme. Tapaswini, who hails from Bhadrak, now lives with her relatives in Bhubaneswar.
