Bhubaneswar: Mild tremors were felt across the twin cities Wednesday evening at 7:25 pm as an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale hit areas on the India-Myanmar border. Strong tremors were reported in Guwahati and Patna, while mild ones were felt as far away as Chennai and Delhi.
Tremors of the quake shook the North-East, several parts of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and even Delhi and NCR.
In Orissa, the tremors were recorded as having a magnitude of 2 on the Richter scale. Besides Orissa, jolts were felt in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, said A Sardar, director in-charge at Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre. There was no immediate report of any casualty or major damage. The epicentre was 985 km away from the city.
According to National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 134 km. The United States Geological Service said the epicenter of the earthquake measured 6.9 on the Richter scale and was 74 km south-east of Mawlaik in Myanmar.
“Since the quake occurred at a depth of 134 km, the impact could be felt at a large distance,” said JL Gautam, Operations Head at the National Centre for Seismology in New Delhi.
“I was preparing dinner when I felt the tremors. It was scary and I ran out of the house with my children,” said Sonali Pathy, a resident of Old Town in the city.
