Bhubaneswar: Many parts of motorcycles which are lying at various police stations in the city after being seized by police in cases related to thefts and accidents often go missing, much to the surprise of their owners.
The owners of some seized vehicles alleged that they approached police stations after settlement of their cases to take back their vehicles, but were shocked to find that their bikes were stripped of vital parts.
Recently, parts of a seized vehicle lying at Nayapalli police station in the city have allegedly gone missing. The vehicle bearing registration number OD-02W-0804 belongs to a person who was arrested by the Nayapalli police and subsequently sent to jail in connection with a crime. The battery and other key parts of the engine of the bike have been found missing, according to sources.
It is not an isolated case of missing parts in a bike kept at the police station. Many other seized bikes lying at the police station also stripped of their parts. Batteries of majority of bikes have gone missing, according to sources.
The matter has brought the role of police officials under scanner. It is suspected that some criminals are stealing the parts of the vehicles in connivance with some police officials and selling them to prospective buyers.
Earlier, several vital parts of a swanky car lying at Sahid Nagar police station had allegedly gone missing. Similarly, some miscreants had set a SUV on fire at Khandagiri police station, but the police officials were unaware of it. Nayapalli IIC Sangram Keshari Patnaik said, “I do not have any information regarding stealing of spare parts of motorcycles. We will look into it and probe the matter accordingly.”
