As Nepal grapples with massive Gen Z-led protests, an old video of a school student giving a speech has gone viral online. The clip, featuring a boy named Ora, was originally recorded during his school’s annual function.

In the footage, Ora begins with a voice filled with conviction and optimism. “Today, I stand here with a dream of building a new Nepal. The fire of hope and passion burns within me, but my heart is heavy because this dream seems to be slipping away,” he says.

As the speech unfolds, his words become more powerful. He describes his dream as an attempt to “mortalise a monumental change in the course of history.” Turning his message toward the nation, he declares: “Nepal, our mother, the country that gave us birth and nurtured us, what did it ask for in return? Just our honesty, our hard work, our contribution. But what are we doing?”

Ora then points out the persistent issues dragging the nation backward — political turmoil, joblessness, and corruption. “We are bound by the chains of unemployment, trapped in the selfish games of political parties. Corruption has woven a web that is extinguishing the light of our future,” he says.

He further calls on the youth to rise as leaders of transformation. “We are torchbearers of the future. If we do not raise our voices, who will? If we do not build this nation, who will? We are the fire that will burn away the darkness. We are the storm that will sweep away the injustice,” Ora proclaims.

Why are protests erupting in Nepal?

The resurfaced speech has struck a chord as Nepal faces a wave of protests led mostly by young demonstrators. The unrest began after the government blocked 26 social media platforms — including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp — citing their “failure to register locally.” Many see this move as a direct assault on free speech, sparking nationwide outrage.

The demonstrations have turned violent, with security forces clashing with protesters. Several young lives have already been lost this week, and nearly 200 others are reported injured.

Mounting anger and public pressure eventually pushed Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign, signaling a dramatic shift in the nation’s political scene.
