New Delhi: Amidst the speculations on whether there will be a joint New Delhi G20 declaration or not at the end of Leaders’ summit, G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant Friday said that the draft of joint declaration has been prepared and is being sent to leaders for their consideration.
Kant, however, skipped the question whether there will be a joint declaration or not. He did not divulge the details on the content of the joint declaration and asked to maintain privacy with respect to it.
“I will prefer to give glimpse of joint declaration after the summit gets over,” Kant said.
Amidst the Ukraine-Russia war, clouds have been looming over the joint declaration in New Delhi since India took over G20 presidency.
Amitabh Kant also didn’t put clear light on whether there will be a discussion on Russia-Ukraine War stating that G20 is an economic forum. It was further said that from the perspective of economic challenges the war posed, there was discussion on it in Bali.
From the aspect of focus on global south, India’s G20 presidency may turn out to be a major success as there has been a nearly consensus among the members for inclusion of African Union in the G20. Kant, however, said that the final picture will come out only after the conclusion of the summit. He further said that when India took G20 presidency the country focused on global south and the requirement of developing countries.
“PM who is a great believer in Global South had written to all the leaders and there has been a very positive response and formally that will come before the Summit,” he said on African Union.
Speaking on Chinese President Xi Jinping skipping the G20 Summit in Delhi, Amitabh Kant said, “China is a multilateral player. In multilateral discussions, the issues are very different from bilateral issues and the Chinese discuss issues of growth, and development from their perspective. The challenge about any multilateral discussion is you have to bring consensus across every issue, every country has veto power. We’ve been able to work with every single country and bring them on board.”
Significantly, India assumed the presidency of the G20 December 1 last year and it will conclude November 30.
