Bhubaneswar, July 19: The new campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar at Arugul, on the outskirts of the capital city, will be inaugurated Monday by the chairman of the board of governors SK Roongta. The IIT director and other staff members along with IIT students will attend the inauguration.
Two hostels, which have the capacity of accommodating 588 students of the institute, a guest house and about 40 staff quarters have been constructed at Arugul.
“The shifting of students to the hostels on the new campus began Saturday and will be completed by July 24. However, students will study in the existing temporary campuses in the city till the completion of other work on the new campus at Arugul,” said IIT acting registrar Devraj Rath.
IITBBS was the first among the eight new IITs sanctioned by the Union government in 2008 to start functioning and also got 518 acres out of total over 900 acres of land for its permanent campus in February 2009.
IITBBS had started functioning from the IIT Kharagpur campus from the 2008-09 academic session and shifted to the capital city in 2009. The institute functioned out of Toshali Bhawan, used the laboratory of the Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (IMMT) and workshop of the central tool room. It had a training centre at Chandaka Industrial Area.
“The shifting of the campus was the prime agenda for the betterment of the students. It is indeed a proud moment. The students and staff members are very excited about the shifting,” said IIT director RV Raja Kumar.
