Angul: A newborn girl, dumped in a garbage bin near the SBI branch of Mahula Buri Sahi, was rescued by Nalco Nagar police here Monday.
Some locals who spotted the abandoned infant near the bank at 12.50 pm informed the Nalco Nagar police. The police reached the spot and rushed the newborn girl, said to be two-day-old, to Angul District Headquarters Hospital for treatment. Locals suspect some unwed mother might have abandoned the child. They demanded a probe and action against the mother.
“What would have happened if some stray dogs had fed upon the baby? Such nasty people should be punished as per law,” a woman expressing resentment said. While many have come forward to adopt the girl, necessary steps would be taken on the orders of the child protection officer, police said.
Meanwhile, an investigation has begun to ascertain who and under what circumstances the newborn was abandoned.
