Bhubaneswar: In a major relief for Odisha in the Mahanadi water sharing dispute, the principal bench of National Green Tribunal (NGT) served notice Monday to the Chhattisgarh government for allegedly violating the earlier order of the Kolkata bench of the body to stop work on projects that have not been commissioned in the river upstream.
The NGTs order came during the principal bench’s hearing on this matter Monday in which it accepted the appeal for penalty on Chhattisgarh government for violating the order of NGT Kolkata Bench, September 10, 2017.
The matter was heard in the court of Justice Jawad Rahim and expert panel member Satyawan Singh Garbyal.
The Advocate General of the Chhattisgarh government JK Gilda pleaded for the state, while advocate Mohan Kataria appeared on behalf of the Odisha government and lawyer Ritwik Dutta pleaded for original applicant Sudarsan Das.
The tribunal had earlier put a stay on construction of barrages on the Mahanadi till its next hearing. In another development, the Calcutta High Court last year had also asked Chhattisgarh to withdraw the writ petition challenging the order of Kolkata bench of NGT to halt construction of 31 projects undertaken by the state.
