NHRC seeks report from health secy

Cuttack, May 7: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), which has taken congnizance of the death of three pregnant women at the Veer Surendra Sai Medical College and Hospital, Burla, Sambalpur, has sought a detailed report from the state health secretary within two weeks.
Three pregnant women died April 10 after caesarean operations were conducted on them at the hospital. The women have been identified as Sulochana Pradhan of Jharsuguda district, and Kalpana Mahakud and Kasturi Seth of Bargarh district. The family members of the women have alleged that the deaths occurred because of the negligence of doctors and other medical staff at the hospital.
Rights activist Akhand had filed a petition in this regard with the apex human rights body. The petition alleged that the shortage of doctors at the hospital is a cause of concern and patients have to suffer because of this.
